Chapwani Private Island |
|
Chapwani is a small hotel on a private island surrounded by
white sandy beaches only ten minutes away by boat from the
capital Stone Town. There are five bandas (thatched
bungalows) each with two en-suite rooms, making a total of ten
rooms. Inside you’ll find a large double bed – the traditional
Zanzibar four-poster with a mosquito net draped over it – whose
plump pillows are adorned with a freshly-plucked hibiscus
flower. There’s a small table and chair, a ceiling fan, a
picture or two, and not much else. There’s just enough space for
a cot or an extra bed. At the back is a bathroom with basin,
shelves and an open-plan shower; and a separate toilet. All in
all it’s a simple, practical, comfy beach room. Outside is a
wooden terrace with deckchairs, and just beyond that a thatch
parasol with your own sun loungers. The sea is so close that at
very high tides it practically laps at your terrace.

Chumbe Island Lodge |
|
Chumbe is a small forested island just a few kilometers to the
south of Zanzibar Stone town. It is at the center of a small
marine conservation area and is the site of a small and
exclusive lodge. There are just seven of these fabulously weird
constructions, for a maximum of around 14 guests, so the island
never feels busy, even when full. The bandas are reasonably well
spaced, although could have been farther apart for our liking,
but do nonetheless give a real feeling of being out in the
wilds. All of the rooms look out towards the sea and it takes
just thirty seconds to stroll from the comforts of your hammock
to feeling the warm tropical ocean lapping at your feet. We had
a slight preference for the last two bandas, which give a
greater sense of privacy. Built from palm thatch and other
natural materials, these constructions have a light, airy feel.
All rooms are equipped with double or twin mattresses on the
floor of the mezzanine sleeping area, accessed by a ladder. Beds
can be made up as a double or two twins. There are
self-contained bathrooms with hot and cold water shower, large
living rooms equipped with handmade furniture and decorated with
African art and colorful fabrics ... and very comfortable
hammocks. |
